Every senior operator I work with eventually asks me the same question. Where do you get your information?
Nowhere clean. That is the honest answer. The official sources have been caught lying too many times to count. The alternative space, where most operators turn when the official sources fail them, has either lost the plot or is being run by the same people running the official sources.
Every direction you look, the ground is compromised.
A post arrived in my feed this week. The kind every operator now sees in theirs once they have clicked on one piece of adjacent content, because the algorithm takes care of the rest. Seven hidden Hermetic laws to unlock the fifth dimension. Numerology. Quantum buzzwords. A love-bomb sign-off.
Read both halves of the field and you operate on the actual field. Read one half or neither, the architecture decides for you. What follows is how to read both.
The official sources first
The credibility of the institutional knowledge class, especially through the COVID era and the last six or seven years generally, is not dented. It is spent.
Origins of a pandemic suppressed for political reasons then quietly conceded. Policies presented as settled science reversed inside months without acknowledgement, the reversal itself memory-holed. Credentialled dissenters censored through privately owned platforms acting on government direction. The reproducibility crisis in published research, ongoing. Regulatory capture by the industries the regulators were meant to oversee, the position of any honest reader of the public record. "Trust the science" became a slogan deployed to shut down inquiry. The precise opposite of what inquiry requires.
The class that wore the lab coat traded the authority of the method for the convenience of the verdict. That trade cannot be undone by communication strategy or rebranding. The people who watched it happen have walked away. They are not coming back on the same terms.
The lying did not start with the pandemic
Mass-produced narrative did not start in 2020. The capacity to manufacture the public mind has been refined since mass publication itself, and the operators behind it have been refining the craft for centuries. What we lived through over the last decade was not an aberration. It was the loudest, fastest, most surveilled and most quickly reversed version of an operation that has been running since long before any of us were born. The Inheritance Manifesto traces this back further than most people are comfortable looking. The pattern is older than the laboratory and older than the printing press operating at scale. What is new is the speed.
That is the official side.
The senior partner
When the official side breaks, operators do not stand still. They look elsewhere. Most reach toward something much older than the laboratory itself.
Hermetic philosophy with roots in Ptolemaic Egypt and a transmission lineage running through the Renaissance into the present, including its early-twentieth-century distillation The Kybalion, which itself sits inside an active argument with serious people on both sides about lineage and authority. Vedantic and yogic traditions thousands of years deep. Taoist cosmology. The Stoic disciplines of perception and assent. Jungian psychology drawing from all of the above. Aboriginal knowledge systems whose understanding of land, ecology and the human person has only lately been considered worth listening to by the people who almost extinguished them.
Most of what these traditions taught has, in recent decades, been graciously consented to by institutional science as it slowly catches up. Not that the consent was ever required. The traditions did not need the lab coat to legitimise them then. They do not need it now. They were here first.
These are not the alternative to science. They are the senior partner. Science is the upstart, four centuries old at best, useful within its actual domain, ruinous when it claims a domain it does not have. The traditions are millennia deep, multi-civilisational, and built on lineages of disciplined inquiry conducted by serious people across thousands of years. To frame them as competitors to a recent method that has just discredited itself is to accept the lab coat's framing of the relationship. I do not accept it.
Grant the senior partner its actual position and the question shifts. The question is no longer "is this stuff real, or do we need scientists to check?" The question becomes "is this a genuine transmission from the tradition it claims, or is it manufactured product wearing the costume?" The first question is the wrong question. The second is the only one worth asking.
Why the alternative space is also captured
The senior partner exists. The senior partner is not what most operators are finding when they walk away from the mainstream. What they are finding is a corruption of it, run by the same architecture that captured the mainstream in the first place.
That architecture is doing two jobs at once inside the alternative space.
First job. Generate engagement-optimised content that drives revenue. Manufactured mysticism, packaged for fifteen-second loops, sold at scale.
Second job. The one most people miss. Operate inside the target the way John Perkins described the work of the economic hitmen in Confessions of an Economic Hitman. Appear to help. Seed the disarray. Produce content so easy to ridicule that the captured mainstream gets to point and laugh, and the original wisdom traditions get buried inside the same dismissal that justifiably hits the imitations. Discredit the impostor and the senior partner goes down with it. That is not collateral damage. That is the operation.
The enforcement arm is fact-checking. Not inquiry. Procurement. Trace the funding and ownership of the major fact-checking organisations and you do not find disinterested journalism. You find a network of foundations and platforms with documented positions on every topic being adjudicated. Open Society Foundations. Omidyar Network. Gates. Google. Meta. The International Fact-Checking Network sits inside the Poynter Institute, itself a beneficiary of the same funding pool. The "independent" fact-checkers partnered with Meta were paid by Meta to flag content Meta then suppressed. The Twitter Files revealed coordinated government direction to platforms on what to label and what to bury. The lab-leak fact-checks reversed once it became politically acceptable to reverse them. The Hunter Biden laptop was branded "Russian disinformation" by fifty-one former intelligence officials in a public letter that turned out to be false. None of this is conspiracy theory. It is the documented public record.
That is not fact-checking. That is narrative control wearing the costume of inquiry. And it serves the architecture, not the reader.
The whole loop is closed. Manufactured mysticism floods the alternative space. Fact-checkers, funded by the same architecture, point at it and ridicule it. The captured mainstream takes the cue and dismisses the senior partner along with the imitations. The reader watching the laughter from the mainstream side concludes the alternative is full of nonsense. The reader walking away from the mainstream concludes the fact-checkers are part of the problem they are walking away from. Both readers are partially right. Both are entirely managed. The architecture wins both audiences.
What lands in your feed
Back to the post I named at the start. Here it is in full.
Seven hidden Hermetic laws unlock the fifth dimension. Vibration to be "weaponized" against probability waves. Numerology that makes seven plus seven equal fourteen and one plus four equal five, which is, the post insisted, the exact code for your fifth dimensional shift. Sign-off: thank you, and we love you.
I am not going to tell you the seven inner keys it advertised do not exist. I do not know. Lost knowledge has a habit of being dismissed the moment it surfaces, often by the same class that later gets credit for "discovering" it once the embarrassment has been forgotten. Half the pharmacopoeia is plant medicine the laboratory once mocked, synthesised and rebranded. The seven outer principles themselves, as I noted earlier, sit inside an active argument about lineage and authority. The contents of what dropped into my feed may be a corrupted echo of something real or may be invented end-to-end. I am not the adjudicator and a TikTok carousel is not the venue.
What I can say with confidence is about the packaging, not the substance. The numerology layered on for ceremonial effect. The quantum vocabulary lifted to borrow recent credibility. The "you are chosen" address. The love-bomb sign-off. The pacing built for retention rather than transmission. The absence of any visible lineage, study path, or community to anchor the claim. None of these features belong to a serious transmission of anything. All of them belong to product designed to convert.
You can be uncertain about the contents and still be certain about the operation. That is the distinction worth making.
Five tests
Not a complete list. What I use.
One. Does it have a lineage? Real traditions can name their teachers, their texts, their internal debates, the centuries of commentary that have refined the work. Manufactured material cannot. It claims pure originality, or a vague ancestry that disappears under questioning.
Two. Does it require something of you? Genuine traditions ask for engagement of the operator. Practice, sustained attention, often discomfort. Some can produce shift the first time they actually do the work properly. Others may require years. The mark of a real tradition is not the speed of the result. It is what is required of the practitioner to get there. Real work demands engagement. Manufactured material asks only that you keep scrolling.
Three. Does it flatter you? The traditions, almost without exception, tell the seeker they are deluded, the work is harder than they think, and the obstacles are inside them. Manufactured material tells the seeker they are chosen, already awakened, and the obstacles are external. Flattery is the cleanest tell.
Four. Where does it borrow from? Real lineages speak the language of their own tradition first. They may also note where the recent disciplines have caught up, and that is appropriate. What is not appropriate is the opposite. Lifting recent scientific vocabulary as the primary source of credibility, then reaching for ancient mystery to borrow depth, while occupying neither domain in any disciplined sense. Content rooted in real tradition, with a careful acknowledgement of where science has finally arrived in the neighbourhood, reads completely differently to content reaching for both at once with no foot in either.
Five. What is the ask? Real traditions ask for sustained study, often for participation in community, sometimes for material support of teachers who have given their lives to the work. Manufactured material asks you to subscribe, share, and purchase the next level. The ask reveals the operation.
These tests do not guarantee discernment. They do not always agree with each other. A genuine teacher can have a thin online lineage. A skilled operator can mimic the markers of legitimacy well enough that several of these tests do not fire. The tests are filters, not verdicts. The verdict still requires your judgement. Which is the point.
The practitioner's epistemology
I write Conviction for people who run things. Companies, teams, capital, their own lives. The connection between the post in my feed and the work you do is closer than it looks.
Every leader is now operating inside an information environment where both the official and the unofficial knowledge economies are compromised. The official sources will tell you what serves the interests of whoever captured them. The unofficial sources will tell you what serves the algorithm. The fact-checkers will tell you whatever the architecture funding them needs you to believe. Neither is reliable. All of them are loud. The temptation in such a field is to pick a tribe and outsource your judgement to whatever it endorses.
That is the failure mode. Picking a tribe is how you became the asset of whoever runs that tribe.
The work begins with a harder recognition. Most of what you think you know was not your own conclusion. It was given to you. Parents, schools, peer groups, the surrounding culture. You did not choose it. You absorbed it. The mature operator becomes aware of this and starts the slow process of pulling each belief apart, holding it up to honest light, and either putting it back in place because it survives interrogation or letting it go. The version of you that comes out the other side is the first version that is actually yours. The work does not stop there. It continues for life. Refining as you go. Not through what you are told, but through what you interrogate, explore and investigate against what you are told.
There is an old principle that captures the posture. Believe nothing of what you hear. Nothing of what you read. And only fifty per cent of what you see. The first time you hear it, it sounds cynical. After enough years working at this, it reads as the only sane operating standard available.
That is the practitioner's epistemology. It is older than the lab coat. It is just called by other names. The Stoics called it the discipline of assent. The Hermeticists called it the inner law. The Taoists pointed at the stillness from which observation becomes possible. The operator working it into a Tuesday morning calls it doing the work. The names differ. The practice does not.
Conviction, in the sense this newsletter takes the word, is the readiness to hold your own ground when both tribes are pulling you to surrender it. The mainstream wants you to defer to its expertise. The counter-mainstream wants you to defer to its initiation. Neither deference is leadership. The leader holds the ground. The ground is not neutrality. It is the position from which you can see both operations and refuse both.
That position is available. It does not require dismissing the wisdom traditions, which is what the captured mainstream wants. It does not require dismissing the value of disciplined inquiry, which is what the captured alternative wants. It requires meeting what is in front of you with the maturity to interrogate it, and judge it on its merits.
Pass it on
If you are leading a company, a team, a family, you are not just modelling what to think. You are modelling how to think. The people around you are watching how you decide what to accept, what to reject, what to interrogate further. They are calibrating their own standards against yours.
Help them build the muscle. Not the conclusion. Refuse to hand them your verdicts. Hand them the questions instead. Ask what they have actually observed with their own eyes against what they have been told to see. Ask whose interests are served by the framing they have absorbed. Ask what would have to be true for the dominant narrative on any given question to hold up. The capability you are training is not agreement with your views. It is the capacity to develop their own, defensibly, in an environment designed to prevent them from doing so.
That is the leader's contribution to their people, to their business, and to the life they are part of. Not certainty handed down. The discipline of standing up.
The long view
The wisdom was here first. The corruption follows close behind, because contrast is how this phenomenal reality teaches anything at all. Old wisdom and the operations that target it have walked alongside each other for as long as there has been wisdom worth targeting. What is different now is volume and velocity. You can tell the difference if you are willing to do the work.
The post in my feed was not the work. Whether the seven inner keys it advertised are genuine, partial, or invented is not a question I can settle from a thirty-second video. The packaging told me what I needed to know about the operation. The substance is still open.
The senior partner is still here. The seekers reaching for it are correct to do so. The discernment to find the real thing inside the noise is the work of a lifetime, and it is the work that separates the people I want reading this newsletter from the people who are looking for the next certainty to follow.
